About the plantation
Santalum Spicatum.
The Yawlerin Creek Sandalwood (YCS) plantation is located in the heart of the West Australian Wheatbelt. Established by owners Stephen and Michelle Fry in 2004, this secluded sanctuary is an expression of their passion for the native forestry industry in Western Australia. The plantation was inspired by the desire to conserve a rich part of Western Australia’s history. The Santalum spicatum species is naturally occurring in the southern two thirds of Western Australia. There is strong demand for Western Australian sandalwood for it’s use in religious and cultural practices, incense, perfume, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products.
From the 1840’s into the early 1890s, the export of this essential oil rich timber was WA’s most lucrative export. Due to the relentless harvesting of sandalwood throughout this period, the number of native sandalwood trees drastically dwindled. The depletion of the Santalum spicatum species drove Stephen and Michelle to create their own plantation to preserve what is rightfully a superstar of the West Australian native flora.
Yawlerin Creek Sandalwood offer a range of Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) timber products. Each piece of timber is unique in shape, size and colour. Our timber products are suited, but not limited, to carving, display, functional settings, sculptural, spiritual, ceremonial, religious, healing, and aromatherapy uses.
Sustainable management.
The Santalum spicatum sandalwood species is native to the West Australian Wheatbelt region. Unlike Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album) which requires year round irrigation, Santalum spicatum is well adapted to the low rainfall conditions of the Wheatbelt and does not require irrigation to flourish. Santalum spicatum is incredibly hardy and drought resistant due to its ability to descend into dormancy during periods of particularly low rainfall. As a native species, it’s also highly resistant to pests and diseases, meaning it does not require chemical inputs to thrive.
